Cleary also won a Newbery Medal in 1984 for her standalone bookDear Mr. Henshaw.

Cleary’sbiographyrecounts that by the third grade, her school librarian suggested she become a writer.

“Because if I don’t enjoy writing it, why would anybody enjoy reading it?”

Perhaps this was the secret to what she described as “an exceptionally happy career.”
