Beloved children’s book author Beverly Cleary has died at age 104.
Cleary also won a Newbery Medal in 1984 for her standalone bookDear Mr. Henshaw.
Other popular books written by Cleary include theHenry Hugginsseries and theMouse and the Motorcycleseries, according to herofficial website.
Cleary’sbiographyrecounts that by the third grade, her school librarian suggested she become a writer.
“Because if I don’t enjoy writing it, why would anybody enjoy reading it?”
Perhaps this was the secret to what she described as “an exceptionally happy career.”
Cleary’s husband, Clarence Cleary, died in 2004.
She is survived by her two children, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild (viaThe Washington Post).
