In a 1999, a five-year-old boy named Elian Gonzalez was found drifting three miles off the coast of Ft Lauderdale, Florida. He was the only survivor in a group of refugees, who were attempting to flee Cuba in a raft. After a six-month battle, the child was denied political asylum.
